(INDIANAPOLIS) -- This January marks the fourth year of the “Tree Luggers” service, an annual fundraiser designed to alleviate the hassle of post-Christmas clean-up. Instead of hauling your Christmas tree away after the holidays– and cluttering your car with sap and pine needles along the way – local residents can have the volunteer Tree Luggers do the work for them.
The Orr Fellowship – a professional program that places college graduates with high growth, entrepreneurial companies in central Indiana for a two-year fellowship – operates the annual holiday fundraiser in an effort to raise money for the Fellowship, local churches, and local charitable organizations. Current Orr Fellows will be picking up Christmas trees from houses and transporting them to nearby Indy Parks locations where they will be recycled into mulch.
“The suggested donation for pickup and disposal is $20,” said Ty Benefiel, a 2008 Orr Fellow at Angie’s List, who is organizing this year’s initiative. “Not only do all donations to Tree Luggers help the community, but they are also 100 percent tax deductable.”
Tree Luggers will serve various neighborhoods in and around Indianapolis (including Broad Ripple, Butler-Tarkington, Meridian-Kessler, the near North side, Carmel, and Fishers) for four consecutive Saturdays after the New Year: Jan. 2, 9, 16, and 23.
For those local residents outside the pickup area who are interested in using the service, Tree Luggers will attempt to accommodate them as well, Benefiel said.
Tree Luggers, the Orr Fellowship’s largest fundraiser, raised $4,000 last year. The organization’s goal is to double that amount this year.
To reserve a date to have your tree hauled away, go to www.treeluggers.org, or call 317-396-9107 and leave your name, address, phone number, email address, and preferred date.
